Every now and then I get sent something that really blows me away. This blog is going to be short but very, very sweet.  You see , I love talented people and there are many of those around. However, every now and then I come across something that is so remarkable that it is clear that “talent” has conspired with “passion” to produce something spectacular, unique and well….very very different!

Grab some headphones or turn up you speakers and be prepared to be amazed. I give you The Voca People!

Dream makers vs dream haters

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Dream Haters. It’s sometimes hard to avoid them because they are everywhere. Dream Haters are those people that try to convince others that their goals are out of reach. This could manifest itself in many ways. When I was looking to change my career many years ago (I used to work in advertising) I was told my numerous “experts” that it would be impossible for me to earn the same amount of money in another industry because I was so well established.

When I was about  22 years old I remember someone asking me what I wanted to do with my life and I said “I want to change the world – I’m just not sure how”. This was met with much laughter and derision – a reaction that I became so familiar with that I eventually stopped giving that answer a just resorted to a simple “I’m not sure”.

Fortunately, I was stubborn enough to keep my eyes firmly on the future,  and without ever really knowing where each step would lead,  I always knew that one day I would get myself in a position to make a difference.

The New World Institute is that dream realized. We exist to help people who have been laid off or are looking to change careers achieve their dream and realize their real potential. We are here to help people make those niggling hunches about what they should be doing turn into the reality of what they ARE doing. We help our clients discover their true calling and move into their dream job and a happier life.

Personally – I am always excited when I meet someone with a dream.  I love to meet people who are trying to swim against the tide, people who are trying to achieve the “impossible”, people who just won’t listen to the people around them wo are telling them that this or that cannot be done.  or I typically go out of my way to help these people in whichever way I can because throughout my career I was told I couldn’t do things. In fact - some of my greatest achievements were born out of ideas that people tried to block or throw doubt upon.  Every time someone tells me I can’t do something or tries to make it impossible I do it anyway and it usually works out far better than I even planned.

These people who try to squash your dreams, or say thing like “I have already tried that and it doesn’t work” are everywhere and once you can identify them you can either shoose to avoid them or smile, agree and do it anyway!

The following video clip is taken from my favorite comedy show of all time “The Office”. This is the UK version of The Office which only ran for 12 golden episodes. In this clip David Brent (the Boss) is giving Dawn (the employee) her quarterly review.

This is the the most tragically funny example I could find of a Dream Hater in action.  Brilliantly acted, hilariously funny and too similar  to so many of the reviews I had in my corporate career!

Enjoy the clip and in the words of the late great Tupac Shakur “ Reality is wrong. Dreams are for real”.

The real cause of attention deficit disorder

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Do you procrastinate at work? Do you feel unmotivated, unfocused and easily distracted?

Then maybe you  have ADD.

Attention Deficit Disorder is commonly diagnosed to people who suffer with these symptoms however, in the UK (where I am from) ADD isn’t something doctors really diagnose or treat. When I moved to the US I thought it was great that America had managed to give a name to the “illness” I had suffered from for a large part of my professional career. How fantastic i thought – not only do they have a name for this condition but they  also have drugs to treat it!

However, through my work at The New World Institute I have begun to realize that many people who think they are suffering from ADD are more likely to be  suffering from  a condition called or JNIID or “Just Not Into It Disorder”

JNIID suffers experience very similar symptoms to people with ADD but the cause of their “illness” comes from a lack of interest and passion around whatever they are trying to focus on. This manifests itself in suffers not being able to complete simple tasks at works,  procrastinating over projects and tasks and spending much of their time dreaming about what else they could be doing. JNIID suffers are also likely to say things like “I live for the weekend” and refer to their work as something that “pays the bills.”

Unfortunately, the medical world does not recognize the condition of JNIID because a) I just made it up and b) it does not sound nearly as medically authentic as ADD!   Drugs like Adderall have been over prescribed to people for years to help them deal with issues that often stem from being being bored at work or with life in general.  The New World Institute has developed a program called “Discover Remarkable Work’* that can help not only alleviate the symptoms of JNIID but also identify and correct the issues that are causing them.

Through 12 years of research and development the Discover Remarkable Work* is proven to be the best way of  finding focus, motivation , balance and enjoyment in you work while while allowing a person to identify their calling and purpose.  Loving what you do is no longer a pipe dream for many people – it is a reality that more and more of our customers are starting to realize brings tangible benefits including stronger relationships, better health, better concentration and financial security.

If you can identify work or a career that feels like a hobby then it stops feeling like work , you weekends begin to feel 5 days longer and you start to wish you had more hours in the day rather than counting down the minutes to each hour on a Monday afternoon.

So – for all of you who think you might have JNIID then go to The New World Institute and discover an alternative solution that could be the a much healthier solution to an age old problem.

* Side effects may include better relations, happier life, more energy, shorter days, longer weekends, skipping while walking to work, smiling on Monday afternoons, incessantly talking about your job, wanting to work weekends, making more money, enjoying life way too much

Steve Jobs’ on the importance of finding your passion

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Are you a Mac or a PC? This is question has been discussed for years over blogs, in bars and even in the offices of The New World Institute. Personally, I prefer PC’s but for many years I have admired Apple products for their design, functions and the sheer love that is lavished on every single product they make. Apple are pioneers in their field and had Bill Gates not spent a year working at Apple only to brazenly copy their Operating System and create Windows, then perhaps 95% of you who are reading this now would be doing so through a Mac instead of a PC,

Steve Jobs has pioneered the way software and hardware is designed, turned the music industry on it’s head, changed the way music is consumed and distributed and revolutionized the movie industry.

What is also interesting is that Steve Jobs never graduated college.

At The New World Institute we believe that if everyone was passionate about the work they did not only would they be much, much happier but the world would also benefit in ways we can’t imagine.

We also believe that the best time to discover your passions is before you leave school or even go to college. Do Your Thing! (our teens program) is specifically designed to help teenagers identify a future they are passionate and excited about. We believe that discovering your own remarkable work is key to leading a happy and remarkable life.

This philosophy is beautifully articulated by Steve Jobs in his Stanford Commencement Address that took place in 2005.  His vision, passion and raw enthusiasm for pursuing a path that he was passionate about is an amazing example of the incredible potential a person can realize if they take the leap and follow their heart.

Every day we help people all over the world follow in the footsteps of Steve and take the first steps to a career that they were born to do.  Steve is an inspiration to all of us here at The New World Institute and although I admire him for his incredible achievements and vision,  I think for now at least , I will stick with my Dell!

bored with your job? Relief is at hand

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Being bored at work is something that many people encounter often. From my own experience I discovered that this boredom could result in some pretty unhealthy behavior. I used to leave my desk to buy food and candy because I was bored stiff with the work I was doing and couldn’t wait to get away from my desk. Worse still, I took up smoking to alleviate the boredom and get me away from my desk – a habit i fostered for some 12 years!

So – with this in mind I have decided I will make it my life mission to help people who are bored at work and suffering the same way that I did to transform their careers into work they love to do. I know that not everyone will be ready for this change and so, for those of you who plan to sit out your ‘less than happy” careers for a little longer I will bring you relief in the form of boredom busting games and  other interesting ways to pass time at work.

Today’s installment is a game that I played a lot in the past. In fact – I spent hours playing this simple but highly addictive game.

Now, look out to check if the boss is around, scatter your desk with papers and squint to look like you’re highly focused.

Ready?

Welcome to The New World Institute Blog

Friday, November 28th, 2008

So - after many years of trials, testing, bleeding, sweating and a little bit of crying here and there….The New World Institute finally enters the world of blogging! In this blog we will ensure I will post articles that are always in line with our own values as a company. This means you can expect this blog to open, bold,  honest and fun!  I will talk about all things to do with transforming people lives and careers and we will always be impartial.

We believe that everyone should and can love the work that they do. We believe every child should have proper career direction  at school, that post graduates need career orientation before they take the leap into the working world, and that all adults have a purpose and calling that once identified will lead to remarkable work and careers.

However, this blog will sometimes deviate a little from the template I have outlined above. Why? Because everyday we help people discover remarkable work and sometimes we help people find amazing work. We will shamelessly support (plug) the people we come across who are also doing amazing things and I hope in doing so we can slowly but surely begin to change the world for the better.

Ok - that’s enough typing from me for now. I hurt my hand in a minor snowboarding accident today so this simple blog was actually very painful to write! (Physically I mean - emotionally it was a breeze!)
